The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull, which are located in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn. Problems with the jaw and the muscles of face that control it are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Injury to the jaw, the joint, or the muscles of the head and neck can lead to TMD. The focus of physical therapy for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs)
is relaxation, stretching and releasing tight muscles and scar tissue.
